Refunds for right-on-red camera fines are in the mail, city says Palm Beach Post
After a major policy U-turn, West Palm Beach is sending green to more than 1,700 car owners caught on camera making right turns on red, city officials said today .
The refunding of more than $200,000 to drivers hands back a majority of the money collected in the first six weeks of red-light cameras.
West Palm Beach became the first city in Palm Beach County to issue fines from red-light cameras Feb. 21. Amid rising complaints, the city stopped enforcing right-turn cases April 5.
The typical refund is $125, and some motorists have already received money back. The city expects nearly all eligible car owners to receive checks in the mail this week, spokesman Chase Scott said. Those who think they might still be due a refund can contact the city's finance department next week, he said.
Turning right at a red light without coming to a complete stop remains illegal, but the issue has been how strictly to enforce slow-and-go cases using camera technology. In person, cops rarely ticket drivers for slow-rolling rights unless they are deemed particularly aggressive or dangerous.
