Taxis on road without insurance The West Australian (blog)
29.04.10
Dozens of Perth taxi drivers have been driving in breach of their licences for almost two months because they did not have insurance after a dispute over the payment of premiums.
Some drivers caught up in the bungle have been left wondering what will happen to their hail-damaged cars after last month's storm.
It also emerged that the lack of comprehensive cover left them exposed if a passenger was injured in their vehicles in any way other than in a vehicle accident.
But Milan Petkovic, head of the taxi company which brokered the now-cancelled insurance policy, said yesterday he would personally cover the cost of any repairs to cars.
Mr Petkovic, who is managing director of Sorrento Cabs, also claimed criticism of him was a personal attack by other members of the Serbian community unhappy with his business success.
Several taxi drivers who took out insurance policies under Mr Petkovic told _The West Australian _yesterday they had been left high and dry when they tried to lodge claims after the recent hailstorm and were told by SGIO that their premiums had not been paid.

What is the difference between Private and Public Hire?
Private Hire Insurance – Commonly referred to as Minicab Insurance. All pre-booked appointments usually taken at the minicab office/base.
Public Hire Insurance – Immediate Pick up. Can be flagged down in the street and will always have a taxi light on the roof of the vehicle. Black cabs are public hire.
Can I use my existing vehicle as a Taxi?
Typical types of vehicles used are Saloons/Estates and MPV’s - used for their size and ease of entry and exit for back seat passengers.
It is basically up to your licensing authority as to which vehicle they will agree to plate.
