Cyclers ask Crist to veto bill Sarasota Herald-Tribune

The Florida Bicycle Association is urging Gov. Charlie Crist to veto House Bill 971, also known as the Highway Safety and Transportation Bill.

Here is a closer look at parts of the bill that are in dispute:

Using bicycle lanes

Bicyclists would be required to use designated bike lanes in almost all circumstances.

Sarasota resident Mike Lasche, lobbyist for the Florida Bicycle Association and executive director of the local group Bicycle/Pedestrian Advocates, says that rule is not as sensible as it may sound.

"There are times when safe practice calls for you to leave a bike lane," said Lasche, who sometimes moves to a sidewalk when on busy thoroughfares. "I've got a healthy survival instinct."

The bill exempts cyclists from riding in "substandard" bike lanes but does not define what should be the standard, Lasche said.

The Florida Department of Transportation recommends that bike lanes be at least 4 feet wide, Lasche said. Yet he stressed that some bike lanes, such as those on Sarasota's Fruitville Road between U.S. 41 and U.S. 301, are 3 feet wide.
