So I stopped by a private investigators' conference and traveling P.I. museum last week. The meeting of the East Bay chapter of the California Association of Licensed Private Investigators was in a nondescript conference room in the Holiday Inn near the Oakland airport.

By the time I got there, the talk on surveillance techniques and evidence collection was over and everyone was chatting and joking around like any bunch of regular business people, in the manner of accountants or insurance agents after a seminar on non-qualified stock options or the use of small talking lizards in advertising practices.

Yet something was different about this crowd of 40 or so men and women. Without the slightest interruption in conversation, their eyes latched on me like cuffs on wrists as I moved through the room. It was subtle, almost imperceptible, but palpable. They were watching. Observing. Investigating. Privately.

Convinced their mere cursory scrutiny had already worked up a full mental dossier, I felt exposed, like a walking Facebook page. I just knew they knew I drove a 2007 Honda Civic Si with an annoying scuff on the left rear fender, had eaten Kashi GoLean cereal for breakfast and recently received two complimentary coffee cards at Peet's which had stuck together when the clerk handed them to me, but I didn't give the extra one back. I was going to. Really.
